Chicago’s Local Theatre Scene

When one hears “theatre” the first thought that may come to their mind is New York City and the stretch of theatres on Broadway Avenue. Chicago’s theatre scene isn’t anything to miss, either. Chicago has massive theatres downtown such as the famous Chicago Theatre that you can catch shows like Hamilton, Mamma Mia!, or A Christmas Carol. However, Chicago’s theatre scene shouldn’t end in the Loop-the North side of Chicago’s theatre district in Lakeview is home to numerous performance spaces that all feature talented stars, complex stories, and entertainment for all ages. Next time you find yourself in Chicago spend some time in Lakeview to check out some of these amazing venues and see why theatre is such an essential element to the Chicago experience.

TimeLine Theatre Company

TimeLine Theatre Company is a non-profit performance art center that focuses on presenting stories that are inspired by history to connect to the current day’s social and political conflicts.

Greenhouse Theatre Center

The Greenhouse Theatre Center is an actively producing theatre company, performance venue, and home to Chicago’s only dedicated used theatre books store. The theatre’s goal is to grow performance and theatre throughout Chicago by producing and housing theatrical projects for all to enjoy.

Athenaeum Theatre

The Athenaeum Theatre is home to a 985-seat opera house that happens to be Chicago’s oldest continuously operating theatre outside of the loop of Chicago. The company focuses on bringing new and exciting projects to life with a staff of theatrical professionals while also encouraging the growth and appreciation of theatre and the arts in Chicago.

Briar Street Theatre

The Briar Street Theatre is home to a Chicago classic: The Blue Man Group! This long-running show is “hard to describe and easy to love” as a unique experience that celebrates the audience as a crucial element to the show.
