There are countless cities all over the country that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face but Chicago is the only one that will promise you’ll leave having a good laugh. As one of the comedy capitals of the world, Chicago boasts numerous opportunities to enjoy comedy all over the city. Standup comedians, improvisational actors, and humorous storytellers flock from all areas of the world to perform on Chicago stages to entertain and amuse. Numerous improv theatres such as The Second City and iO have performances each night featuring talented acts, and that’s just including improv. Regardless of your sense of humor, there is likely a comedy act somewhere in Chicago suited just for you every night of the week.
With so much comedic talent saturated in one part of the country, it only makes sense that Chicago is the home base of the world’s largest sketch comedy festival. The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival takes place every winter in Chicago and the lineup has only ever increased since its founding year in 2002. Performers, writers, and comedy-lovers alike gather at Stage 773 in the Belmont Theatre District to perform and create in one of the funniest places in the country.
Over 180 improv troupes, solo acts, and more travel to Chicago to perform throughout the festival. With different shows taking place in all 4 theatres inside Stage 773’s venue you’ll have plenty of options on which acts you’ll want to see. Wanna see a one-man show about feeling stupid? How about a musical improv team that only sings about true crime? These are just a few of the wacky acts you’ll have the chance to see at the festival. Sketch Fest will be headlined by the comedic act “Parv & Pudi” (Parvesh Cheena of Outsourced fame with Danny Pudi, the Community favorite who plays Abed). Both performers are Chicago-based actors and friends who’ll be providing songs, dances, and sketches to help kick off the fantastic lineup of talent gracing the 8-day event. So if you’re wanting to fight off those winter blues, you may just want to check out the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival to have a laugh (or two).
The Chicago Sketch Festival takes place in the Belmont Theatre District at Stage 773. When you’re done laughing you’ll find yourself surrounded by the culture and excitement of the bordering Northalsted (formerly Boystown), Wrigleyville, and Lakeview neighborhoods.
